The Pounders, seeded last, prepared for a long weekend
in Seattle due to a partial squad. Playing tough with only 1 highpointer
on Saturday, we could only put 6.0 classification points on the
court. Although frustrating, it was good practice for class 3.0
Lynn Nelson against triple teams. The low-pointers held their own,
but had difficulty keeping up with the other teams' 8.0 point lineups.
Luckily, the much-needed class 2.5 Jemal Mfundshi arrived in Seattle
at midnight Saturday after a long day at school. Sunday, the Pounders
were up against rival Seattle's 2nd team, which was seeded just
ahead of Portland. This was the same Seattle team that had won by
one goal in overtime in last year's Portland tournament. The revenge
was sweet as the Pounders dominated all facets of the game and ended
up on top by seven goals. Although finishing the tournament with
a losing record (1-3), the Pounders proved they would compete regardless
of the circumstances.
The Pounders arrived in Reno with a full squad of
11 players, the most in our short history. We were seeded fifth
and hopeful of placing higher than in any other tournament thus
far. The competition was fierce as all four of the Pounders' games
during the weekend were decided by three goals or less. Friday night,
Portland lost to the second seeded Houston Hurricanes team by three
goals. The first game Saturday was a nailbiter against the Phoenix
Heat 2nd team, where the Pounders won by one goal. Class 3.0 Lynn
Nelson scored with 0.2 seconds left in regulation when class 2.5
Fred Williams deflected the ball to break up a game-winning pass.
Saturdays second game against fourth-seeded California Quake also
went down to the wire. Portland forced the game into overtime after
being down three goals with less than a minute to play. The Pounders
kept the momentum in overtime to beat Quake by one goal and earn
the right to compete in the 3rd/4th place game Sunday against the
3rd seeded San Diego Bushwackers. With two members of the Swedish
national team, the Bushwackers were too tough and beat the Pounders
by three goals. Though Portland lost two close games this weekend,
the fourth place Pounders felt they left Reno on a positive note.
The Pounders came to Tempe seeded sixth without 2.5
Fred Williams. Freddie, who was voted on the all-tournament team
in Reno, had prior commitments with work that weekend. The Pounders
had no trouble of disposing of the ninth seeded Las Vegas Highrollers,
eighth seeded Phoenix Heat 2, seventh seeded U of A Wildchairs,
and third seeded partial Minnesota Ice squad. Despite being annihilated
by the fourth seeded Texas Stampede, the Pounders put up a good
fight against the second seeded New York Strykers, losing by only
five goals. Though Portland was skeptical about the weekend's outcome
without our top class 2.5, the sixth seeded Pounders once again
moved up a notch to place fifth in the tournament. For the first
time ever, class 3.0 Lynn Nelson was voted to the all-tournament
team.
